What did we do before email? We wrote letters. What are the differences between a letter and an email?

Formal and informal writing. Know when to use formal writing and informal writing.

Study the handouts. Write an email to your teacher or me in English. You can choose any topic.

You will have a quiz next week. You will have to know some abbreviations, and some emoticons.
2Chatting, Practice
Are IMs (chatting) formal or informal, generally? Do you use emoticons? Do you use writing shortcuts?

Write an email. Class is divided into either 6 groups of 3 or 3 groups of six. Each group is given a person to write an email to, or a situation.

Half of the students are to write an email in English to the teacher, half of the students are to write an email to me in English.

3Role: Seeing a friend that you haven't seen in a while
6 groups of 3. Two friends are walking somewhere and one of the friends meet someone he knows. Create the dialogue for this situation, and make sure you get the person's email address.

Write down words Korean words that came from the English language. You can write as many or as few as you want. Write down this way:

2Onsets and PhonogramsHow many letters in the English language? There are 26 letters in the English language. There are five vowels and twenty-one consonants.

What is an onset? An onset is two or more consonants in a beginning of a word that make a sound.

What is a phonogram? A phonogram is a sound at the end of a word, usually a combination of vowels and consonants.
Please look at your handouts and become familiar with onsets and phonograms. 

In the beginning of class next week there will be a quiz on onsets and phonograms.  On the quiz you will have to write down 5 onsets and 5 phonograms. Also, you will have to write down 2 words, and underline the onset and circle the phonogram. The quiz will only be 5 minutes long.


3Quiddler, modifiedEach group (table) will be given 6 Quiddler cards. The members of each group will try to make different words out of the letters. When a group makes a word, they must have a teacher check the word. If the word is acceptable, then one member of the group writes the word on the board, under their group number. Everyone must download Yahoo Mini dictionary on their computers at home. Also, everyone must download Mozilla Firefox on their computers at home.

Go to Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes webpage. You must memorize all the prefixes, roots, and suffixes, their meanings, and an example word. Next week there will be a quiz.
